■ To be, or not to be, that is the question.
生きるべきか、死ぬべきか。それが問題だ。

全世界は一つの舞台であって、すべての男女は、その役者にすぎない。それぞれ舞台に登場してはまた退場していく。人はその時々にいろいろな役を演じる。舞台は年齢によって七幕に分かれているのだ。

逆境が人に与えるものこそ美しい。それはガマガエルに似て醜く、毒を含んでいるが、その頭の中には宝石をはらんでいる。

恋の始まりは晴れたり曇ったりの4月のようだ。

■ Poor and content is rich and rich enough; but riches endless is as poor and winter to him that ever fears he shall be poor.
貧乏でも満足している人間は金持ち、それも非常に金持ちです。しかし、大金を持っている人でも、いつ貧乏になるかと恐れている人間は、冬枯れのようなものです。

小さなろうそくがなんと遠くまで照らすことか！このように、善行も汚れた世界を照らすのです。

誰の話でも聞いてやれ、しかし自分のことはあまり話すでない。他人の意見をよく聞き、だが判断は差し控えておくこと。

■ Glory is like a circle in the water, Which never ceaseth to enlarge itself. Till, by broad spreading it disperse to nought.
栄光は水面の輪のようなものだ。輪は広がりすぎて消えてしまうまで、どんどん大きくなり続けるからである。

■ Love sought is good, but given unsought, is better.
求めて得られる恋もよいものだが、求めずして得られる恋のほうが、なおのことよいのである。

■ There is a tide in the affairs of men. Which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune; Omitted, all the voyage of their life. Is bound in shallows and in miseries.
人の成すことには潮時というものがある。うまく満ち潮に乗れば成功するが、その期をのがすと、一生の航海が不幸災厄ばかりの浅瀬につかまってしまう。

■ How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world.
人間はなんて美しいんでしょう!素晴らしい新世界。

■ Love’s not Time’s fool.
愛は時に仕える道化ではない。

■ Our remedies oft in ourselves do lie,Which we ascribe to heaven.
天の力でなくてはと思うことを、人がやってのけることもある。

■ When we are born we cry that we are come To this great stage of fools.
人間は泣きながらこの世に生まれてくる。阿呆ばかりの世に生まれたことを悲しんでな。

■ The eye of man hath not heard, the ear of man hath not seen.
人間の眼は聞いたことがなく、人間の耳は見たことがない。

■ The night is long that never finds the day.
どんなに長い夜も、必ず明ける。

■ My words fly up, my thoughts remain below.
ことばは宙に舞い、思いは地に残る。

■ There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.
